Poul M. Volther

Poul M. Volther (1923–2001) was a Danish designer rooted in Scandinavian functionalism. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later educated at the Royal Danish Academy, he emphasized clean, rational design throughout his career. Volther worked under Børge Mogensen at FDB and became its design director in 1959, creating timeless, functional furniture still found in Danish homes today.

His most iconic piece, the Corona Chair (1961/64), featured elliptical cushions and a striking chrome frame. Though initially overlooked, it gained international acclaim after a 1997 relaunch by Erik Jørgensen and was famously featured at the 2002 EU Summit in Copenhagen. Today, the Corona Chair remains a symbol of Danish modern design and Volther’s enduring legacy.
