Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen

Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were the dynamic duo of Danish design—a partnership that hit all the right notes from 1944 to 1975. Together, they didn’t just create furniture; they redefined the way it was made, blending artistry with practicality in a way that set the gold standard for mid-century modern design.

Hvidt, a Copenhagen-born designer, brought a traditional yet innovative approach, starting with his Portex Chair, one of Denmark’s first stacking chairs. Meanwhile, Mølgaard-Nielsen, trained under Danish design legend Kaare Klint, brought a precision that was razor-sharp. When they joined forces, the results were nothing short of magic. The AX Chair, a landmark piece from 1950, showcased their ability to use laminated wood techniques to create something as light as a feather yet strong as steel. Their designs, like the Pinwheel side table and Minerva Sofa, were a perfect marriage of form and function—pieces that could turn heads and stand the test of time.

But their talents didn’t stop at furniture. They also ventured into architecture, designing buildings that were as thoughtfully crafted as their chairs and tables. Over three decades, they designed over 256 furniture pieces and countless architectural projects, leaving a legacy as enduring as the Danish oak they loved to work with.
