Illum Wikkelsø was a significant figure in Danish design, recognized for his contributions to Scandinavian modernism during the postwar era. His background in cabinetry from the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts laid a strong foundation for his future work. Wikkelsø’s designs were characterized by an organic quality and formal simplicity, often featuring biomorphic shapes that harmonized with the human form.
After working with notable cabinetmakers and architects, he began creating his own furniture in 1954 and later established his own workshop. His mastery of materials, especially elm, teak and rosewood, allowed him to create pieces that were not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable.
Some of his most notable works include the T118 Coffee Table, the Gyngestol Rocking Chair, and the Model 91 Lounge Chair and Ottoman, all of which showcase his skillful craftsmanship and design philosophy. Collaborating with various Danish manufacturers, Wikkelsø’s legacy continues to be celebrated in the vintage market, reflecting the timeless nature of his designs.
