Ejvind A. Johansson

“There is much more to furniture design than maths and science.”

The Danish architect and designer Ejvind A. Johansson (1923–2002) led the FDB design studio from 1956 to 1958, following in the footsteps of Børge Mogensen and Poul M. Volther.

Trained as a cabinetmaker, Johansson completed his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts in 1949. At just 33, he was appointed head of design at FDB Møbler, where he carried forward the studio’s legacy while also steering it gently toward a more modern future.

During his tenure, he created a range of furniture with wide appeal—pieces that often embraced contemporary forms and ideas more boldly than those of his predecessors. This progressive spirit is perhaps reflected in the strong prices his work continues to command at auction houses today.

Like Mogensen and Volther, Johansson believed in combining solid craftsmanship with aesthetic design built for everyday use.

It is therefore with great pleasure that Coop has relaunched the J67 chair, originally designed by Ejvind A. Johansson in 1957—a timeless piece that continues to resonate with modern design lovers.
