Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein, born in 1919 in Norway, transitioned from a military career in the Norwegian Royal Marines to the realm of design, focusing initially on cabinetmaking. In 1949, he relocated to Denmark to pursue interior design studies at the Tekniske Skole in Frederiksberg, where he was mentored by the renowned designer and architect Finn Juhl. By 1952, after completing his education, Klein went back to Norway to launch his furniture and interior design business, producing items that epitomized the Danish modern style of the postwar period, notably utilizing premium woods like teak and emphasizing balanced, meticulously crafted forms.

Klein’s creative interests expanded into the domain of plastic furniture, leading him to develop an innovative method for plastic production. His work in this area facilitated a partnership with the Danish furniture company Bramin, supporting his plastic design projects financially. In 1960, this collaboration prompted Klein to settle in Denmark, where he dedicated himself to Bramin until its closure in 1980. Subsequently, in the 1980s, Klein and his family relocated to San Francisco.

Born in Vamdrup in 1917, Poul Buch Hundevad was a highly acclaimed furniture designer and manufacturer from Denmark. Initially trained as a carpenter, Hundevad embarked on establishing his own cabinetmaking workshop and furniture factory called Hundevad & Co. in the early 1950s, right in his hometown. The company showcased a diverse range of furniture designs, featuring not only his personal creations but also the works of esteemed Danish designers like Kay Ingemann Iversen, Carlo Jensen, Harald Plum, Mogens Plum, and Kaj Winding.

In line with the prevailing trend among his midcentury Scandinavian counterparts, Hundevad had a predilection for employing exquisite materials such as rosewood and teak in his furniture pieces. His designs were characterized by a striking blend of aesthetic purity and simplicity, coupled with practical functionality. Hundevad’s mastery of joinery was evident in the skillful techniques he incorporated into the majority of his chair designs. While he achieved significant recognition for his iconic Guldhøj Chair, his creative repertoire extended far beyond that, encompassing an array of pieces ranging from dining chairs and tray carts to bookcases and sideboards. Notable collaborations included a square dining table developed in partnership with Kai Winding in 1950, as well as the visually captivating N°30 Dining Chair introduced in 1958.

Erik Buch, a prominent Danish industrial designer, was born in 1923 in Copenhagen. Specializing in the Scandinavian modern style, Buch’s design philosophy centered around creating furniture that was both organic and functional. His portfolio included a wide range of pieces, such as chairs, stools, and cabinets. Like many of his Danish contemporaries, Buch skillfully combined materials like fabric and leather with beautifully grained woods like polished teak, oak, and rosewood.

Buch gained early recognition with his renowned Model 49 chair, introduced in 1949. Available in both carver and dining chair styles, this iconic piece featured a curved “floating” seat and embodied the classic Scandinavian modern aesthetic. Arguably Buch’s most famous design, the Model 61 barstool (1961) boasted a distinct Scandinavian base with elegantly sculpted lines. Interestingly, several of Buch’s designs were named after the year they were conceived, particularly those manufactured by the cabinetmaker and furniture company Oddense Maskinsnedkeri. The company later changed its name to O.D. Møbler in the late 1960s or early 1970s, a detail reflected in the labels of subsequent Model 61 productions.

Among Buch’s notable creations are the Captain’s Chair (1955) designed for Ørum Møbler, the Model 310 dining chair crafted for Chr. Christiansen in the 1960s, and a rosewood bar stool with a distinctive T-shaped design for Dyrlund, also in the 1960s.

Severin Hansen Jr., a notable Danish furniture designer, is primarily recognized for his exceptional table and desk designs crafted in the classic Danish midcentury modern style. During the 1950s and early 1960s, his creations were manufactured by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri, a furniture company situated in the small town of Haslev near Copenhagen, as well as by the Dutch manufacturer Bovenkamp. Hansen’s notable collaboration with the esteemed Danish porcelain company Royal Copenhagen resulted in a series of rosewood tables adorned with hand-painted and glazed ceramic tiles, skillfully crafted by artists like Grethe Helland-Hansen and Nils Thorssen.

While information about Hansen’s personal life remains limited, his designs have garnered increasing popularity among vintage enthusiasts. He is highly regarded for his exceptional craftsmanship and the use of premium materials. Hansen’s repertoire encompassed a range of furniture pieces, including dining tables, nesting tables, coffee tables, and sewing tables, predominantly crafted from rosewood and mahogany, with a smaller number made from teak. Exemplifying the minimalist aesthetic of the 1960s Scandinavian style, his designs featured angular silhouettes and tapered legs, epitomizing the characteristic idiom of the era.

Yngve Ekström (1913-1988), an architect, woodworker, and furniture designer hailing from Hagafors, Småland, in Southern Sweden, had a diverse range of skills and experiences. Following the death of his father, Ekström joined the Hagafors Chair Factory, Sweden’s oldest furniture factory, at the age of thirteen. The combination of his family’s carpentry background and the knowledge acquired at the factory laid a strong foundation of artisanal expertise.

At the age of eighteen, Ekström set out to pursue a career in design. He enrolled in courses on drawing, painting, and sculpture, and visited the Röhsska Museum for decorative and applied arts in Gothenburg. In 1945, Ekström, along with his older brother Jerker (1911-2006) and friend Bertil Sjöqvist, established ESE Furniture in their hometown. Although they faced initial challenges, the company achieved a breakthrough with their laminated veneer chair called Thema (1952). The chair, designed for efficient shipping as it could be flat-packed, gained popularity and propelled the company forward. After Sjöqvist’s departure, the company was rebranded as Swedese. Although it was sold in 1974, Ekström remained an active contributor to the company until his demise in 1988.

Ekström, along with renowned designers such as Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971), and Poul Kjærholm (1929-1980), played a pivotal role in shaping the midcentury Scandinavian modern style. One of Ekström’s most celebrated works is the Lamino Chair, designed for Swedese in 1956, which continues to be produced today. This iconic armchair features a minimalist design with an undulating shape and a wooden frame crafted from layered bentwood, supported by bent tubular steel legs. In 1999, the chair was honored as the “20th-Century’s Best Swedish Furniture Design” by the Swedish magazine Sköna Hems. Additionally, it received the Design Innovation Award from IMM Cologne in 2003.

Born in Sweden in 1907, Bruno Mathsson was introduced to the possibilities of innovative wood technologies at a young age due to his father Karl, a fourth-generation master cabinetmaker. Despite being self-taught, Mathsson delved into the realms of design and architecture, drawing inspiration from the functionalist movement. Expanding upon his family’s craft, he dedicated much of the 1920s and 1930s to exploring the functional potential of wood.

Mathsson’s furniture designs were characterized by their experimentation with curves and height, prioritizing ergonomics and functionality. His breakthrough came in 1937 when he showcased a collection of bentwood furniture, including the iconic Eva Chair, at the World Exposition in Paris. This propelled him to international recognition and established his reputation in the industry.

During the 1950s, Mathsson shifted his focus towards architecture, often incorporating large glass elements into his residential projects. However, in the 1960s, he redirected his attention back to furniture design and began working with tubular steel. One notable collaboration took place with Danish mathematician Piet Hein, resulting in the creation of the Super Ellipse Table. This distinctive table featured span legs that gave the illusion of the tabletop floating in space.

Mathsson’s innovative approach to design and his contributions to both furniture and architecture solidified his lasting impact on the industry. His works continue to inspire and captivate enthusiasts around the world.

Piet Hein, a Danish polymath born in Copenhagen in 1905, possessed a remarkable range of talents as a scientist, mathematician, inventor, artist, designer, philosopher, and poet. Despite his exceptional intellect, Hein did not pursue a formal degree. He initially enrolled in philosophy courses at the Metropolitan School of Copenhagen but soon shifted his focus to art, studying at a private academy and subsequently at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. He later returned to Copenhagen to delve into the realms of philosophy and theoretical physics. Hein’s diverse educational background laid the foundation for his life’s work, which seamlessly blended art and science.

In the aftermath of World War II, Hein made a groundbreaking invention: the superellipse. This geometric figure, derived through mathematical exploration, combined elements of the ellipse and rectangle. Hein first employed the superellipse to solve a traffic problem at Stockholm’s Sergel’s Square by creating an elliptical roundabout. The distinctive oval shape quickly gained popularity among postwar Scandinavian architects and has since been widely embraced in buildings and urban planning across the globe, from Canada, Mexico, and the United States to France, Japan, and beyond.

Hein also integrated the superellipse into his industrial designs, including the notable Superellipse Tables (1968). These tables were created in collaboration with Swedish architect-designer Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) and Danish architect-designer Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) for the renowned Danish manufacturer Fritz Hansen.

Børge Mogensen was born in 1914 in Aalborg, Denmark. He began his furniture crafting career in 1934 and became a leading figure in modern Danish furniture design alongside Arne Jacobsen and Hans Wegner.

His studies began at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, 1936-38, where he studied furniture design. After that, he explored architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1938 to 1942.

At these institutions, he worked closely with his instructor, Kaare Klint, who recommended his appointment in 1942 as the FDB’s (Denmark Cooperative Federation) first-ever furniture design manager. At Klint’s request, he was able to source “cheap and good quality furniture for the general public.” 1947 saw him produce the “J39” chair, arguably the masterpiece of his career.

Before that, though, he co-exhibited with Wegner in 1945 at the Copenhagen Furniture Craftsman Guild Exhibition. There, he announced his spokeback chairs, which 18 years down the road were commercialized by Fritz Hansen and now by Fredericia.

Mogensen left the FDB in 1950. From 1954 to 1967, he worked in lifestyle research, investigating the amount, sizing, and types of clothes and other miscellaneous goods that were owned by the public. With this data, he developed his “Øresund” series, aiming to optimize for storage. He continued producing new designs and products until he unfortunately passed away at the young age of 58.

Founded by Andreas Omann in 1933, Omann Jun is an internationally recognized Danish furniture manufacturing company, which began with dining tables and beds.

Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Omann Jun saw a steady increase in the variety of its products, with high-quality desks and sideboards made with teak oak rosewood added to its inventory. With beautiful wood grain and squeezed-tip legs, their pieces are highly sought after.
